The ClickHouse PhD Research Internship Program gives doctoral students the opportunity to pursue ambitious research alongside ClickHouse Labs researchers and engineers on challenges in databases, systems, and data infrastructure. Interns spend approximately 10–12 weeks exploring research questions, developing ideas, and investigating technologies that may advance the broader research community and the future of ClickHouse. The program is research-focused, mentor-supported, and shaped around mutual research interests. Work may build on research, prototypes, or systems a student has already explored at their university. Interns work closely with ClickHouse Labs, engage with ClickHouse’s open-source technology and engineering community, share findings, and contribute to the broader research community. The program encourages research and collaboration that can continue after the internship through academic work, open-source contributions, publications, or other forms of collaboration. Possible outcomes include co-authored papers, thesis advising, and other academic collaborations. The internship lasts approximately 10–12 weeks, with flexibility for academic calendars and research needs. It typically begins around June 1 in the summer. Opportunities are available across the US and Europe, subject to role and employment requirements; the company is remote-first. Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes a monthly stipend. Specific projects may emerge from a candidate’s existing research, academic papers, prototypes, ClickHouse Labs priorities, or opportunities to test or extend research concepts within ClickHouse. The program is intentionally flexible rather than a highly structured engineering internship, while high-level problem areas and expectations should be defined several months before the internship begins.
