About The Position

Reporting to the Manager of Research and working under the supervision of the Oral Historian, the Research Intern will work in support of the Museum’s oral history program. The Research Intern’s primary responsibilities include preparing oral history entries for the Museum’s online database, working on oral history projects relating to Latin American and Francophone immigration, and other oral history and research-related tasks as they arise. Tasks may include but are not limited to: working with interviews to write biographies of interview participants; selecting, editing, and reviewing interview excerpts for online or exhibition use; updating internal database fields for oral history interviews; updating interview transcripts; coding interview content using qualitative software; writing literature reviews and research reports; selecting and reviewing oral history clips, providing image research; researching and writing short texts; preparing materials for translation and online use, and other tasks as assigned. It is possible to work remotely for the duration of this position.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree (in progress or obtained within the last year) in History, Public History, Immigration studies, Anthropology, or related
  • Abilities in locating, evaluating, and synthesizing large amounts of information from diverse sources
  • Experience working with digital assets including audio, audio-visual, and still image files
  • Good editing and writing skills
  • Strong attention to detail, especially in dealing with diverse source material
  • Good organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to engage with content that encompasses diverse cultures, identities, and experiences
  • Ability to work with difficult or challenging content
  • Ability to exercise discretion regarding privacy issues associated with interview content
  • Ability to communicate well, and in a tactful and professional manner
  • Ability to take direction, but also to work on own initiative
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Proficient in English and French, reading and listening

Nice To Haves

  • Fluent in French and English, spoken and written
  • Knowledge of Canadian immigration history, including Latin American and/or Francophone migration to Canada
  • Experience conducting, transcribing, coding, cataloging, analyzing and/or using oral history interviews
