About The Position

The mission of the Office of the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors (OVPR) is to foster the expansion of the scale, quality, and impact of scholarly endeavors at UT Austin. We are committed to building capacity, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and lowering the barriers and burden involved in scientific and creative inquiry through the development of an investigator-focused infrastructure that supports the needs of UT Austin's research enterprise. This position provides support to the Associate Vice President for Research, Research Integrity Officer.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and three years of responsible level experience in program administration or program coordination.
  • Ability to build strong and trusting relationships with faculty, scientists, post docs, students, and administrators is essential to this position.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required to effectively and efficiently manage a multifaceted and complex research ethics and integrity portfolio.
  • Must demonstrate strong attention to detail, effective planning and organizational skills, an understanding of research ethics and integrity and a strong knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 and other personal computer applications.
  • Innovation and independent judgement with some oversight and a willingness to take the initiative in the development of the portfolio across disciplines and understanding and maintaining the importance of confidentiality.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree in social sciences, social work or related discipline.
  • Experience in a confidential role such as graduate coordinator or advisor.
  • Course work, training, or previously held position that involved research ethics or ethical dilemmas.
  • Previous work handling research misconduct cases or working in a research support office or a research unit at a university.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the RIO in carrying out research misconduct cases in accordance with federal and university policies.
  • Reviews policies related to the research misconduct cases; assists and coordinates with VPR portfolio staff to review the processes, structures and materials that facilitate better communication and transparency in research misconduct cases; ensures compliance in research misconduct proceedings; offers support in handling research misconduct cases such as communication with complainants and respondents.
  • Partners with VPR stakeholders (the Provost's Office, Deans, ADRs, and others) to develop a principle-based approach to research integrity and ethics with the goal of improving communications and transparency to address conflict in the research and publication process.
  • Develops and establishes processes for research misconduct-related policies and procedures.
  • Assesses the University's research misconduct-related policies and standard operating procedures as consistent with peer institutions.
  • Develops criteria to consider research misconduct-related policies for sunset, revision, or development; and ensures compliance with other regulatory institutions.
  • Coordinates with the RIO to select technical experts and investigative committee members with various expertise to serve during the course of the research misconduct process.
  • Strategically manage the Research Integrity Officer’s (RIO) calendar and time related to RIO matters. This includes calendar support, prepare agendas and appropriate meeting materials, attend and produce meeting minutes as requested, and other necessary logistical details.
  • Prepares correspondence, reports, and memoranda with limited direction and anticipate administrative needs of the RIO and research integrity process.
  • Collaborates between representatives of The Office of Legal Affairs, University Ombuds Offices, University Risk and Compliance Services, the Provost's Office, other university entities, and others; and provides documentation, resources, and processes, as needed, in these cases.
