About The Position

The Koo Laboratory in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School seeks a motivated postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to collaborative research on diagnostic approaches for infections in immunocompromised hosts and the epidemiology and pathophysiology of opportunistic pathogens, particularly fungi. The fellow will work under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Sophia Koo and collaborate with the principal investigator, faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, and students. The role is based in the Thorn Research Building at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital main campus in Boston, Massachusetts, and is onsite. The fellow will be appointed as a Research Fellow at Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School. The position involves designing, conducting, and interpreting experiments; developing expertise in molecular genomics and other research techniques; working with murine pneumonia models and tissues; and analyzing laboratory and patient-related data. The fellow will also maintain research records, troubleshoot and develop methods, prepare reports and manuscripts, contribute to presentations, and train or oversee research assistants and students. Candidates should be recent MD or PhD graduates in a relevant biological field, with at least one year of research-related experience. The compensation range is $71,750–$81,179, with the specific range associated with experience and organizational guidelines.

Requirements

  • Recent MD or PhD graduate in a relevant biological field; candidates expecting to receive the degree soon may be considered.
  • At least one year of experience in a research-related field.
  • Experience with, or strong capacity to learn, murine pneumonia models.
  • Interest in learning and troubleshooting new molecular biology techniques.
  • Familiarity with animal modeling of disease.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to supervise and train staff effectively.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, set deadlines, and adapt to shifting priorities and laboratory needs.

Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and interpret research experiments.
  • Learn molecular genomics techniques, including single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and other methods.
  • Maintain murine models and process murine tissues for detailed evaluation.
  • Use advanced analytical chemistry techniques to define breath volatile metabolite profiles in patients with bacterial, viral, and fungal pneumonias.
  • Analyze mass spectroscopic and differential mobility spectroscopic data from laboratory experiments.
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments in a laboratory notebook.
  • Follow detailed protocols independently while collaborating with laboratory members.
  • Assist in training research assistants and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Troubleshoot problems and instruct others in specialized techniques.
  • Investigate, create, and develop methods and technologies to advance research.
  • Prepare written data reports, methodologies, figures, manuscripts, and progress reports.
  • Contribute to research presentations at local, national, and international meetings.
  • Oversee and train research assistants and students participating in projects, and assist with experimental design and implementation.
