About The Position

This role is for an ambitious researcher looking to drive innovation at the intersection of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, rheology, and advanced mineral processing. The Research Fellow will play a critical role in an exciting ARC Centre of Excellence project, leading the theoretical and rheological investigation for ARC Centre Project S27b. The position involves exploring how non-Newtonian suspension rheology governs ultrafine particle transport and gravity separation in inclined channels under variable acceleration fields. The fellow will work alongside leading experts and key collaborators, bridging the gap between fundamental fluid dynamics and real-world separation performance.

Requirements

  • A PhD (or near completion) in Chemical, Mechanical, or Minerals Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience in complex fluid/suspension rheometry, constitutive modelling, and a strong foundation in particle-laden multiphase flows.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse complex suspension flows.
  • A strong track record of refereed publications, exceptional problem-solving skills, and top-tier written and verbal communication.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in scientific programming (Python or MATLAB) is highly valued.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate and characterise model suspensions across Newtonian, shear-thinning, and shear-thickening regimes using state-of-the-art rotational and high-shear rheometry.
  • Develop and validate cutting-edge theoretical and numerical models connecting suspension mechanics to gravity separation performance.
  • Publish high-impact papers, present at key international conferences, and work closely with the broader ARC Centre community.
  • Provide expert guidance to postgraduate research students while contributing to a vibrant academic environment.

Benefits

  • Access to quality research facilities, infrastructure, world-class teaching spaces, and international collaboration opportunities.
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements.
  • Policies in place enabling staff to combine work and personal commitments, including supporting parents.
