Internship/Research Engineer

Sygaldry Technologies•Ann Arbor, MI

About The Position

Sygaldry Technologies is seeking a hands-on research engineer to build, integrate, and operate experimental systems for its quantum program. The role involves working with real hardware to build advanced scientific machines and develop devices spanning electronics, optics, timing, firmware, and software. A Ph.D. is not required; the company emphasizes demonstrated practical work and what candidates have built.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience building, aligning, integrating, or repairing instruments and experimental setups.
  • Practical depth in one or more of the following: optics and photonics; electronics; RF, microwave, and controls; embedded or FPGA development; vacuum and cryogenics; scientific software and automation; device fabrication and characterization.
  • A track record of making systems work reliably and identifying the root cause of persistent failures.
  • Experience using Python or similar tools for instrument control, data acquisition, and analysis.
  • Experience integrating tools across hardware-control interfaces and software systems.
  • A B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in physics, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Comfort working across disciplines and clearly reporting what worked, what failed, and what was fixed.

Nice To Haves

  • Practical experience in a hardware development or production industry.

Responsibilities

  • Build, test, and commission electronic, optical, vacuum, and cryogenic subsystems.
  • Integrate lasers, RF and microwave hardware, control electronics, and data acquisition into systems.
  • Debug failures across electronics, optics, timing, firmware, and software.
  • Write automation, calibration, and analysis tools to make measurements repeatable.
  • Improve laboratory infrastructure and procedures to keep systems reliable and usable.
  • Document work so team members can operate, maintain, and reproduce it.
