Research Engineer - Formal Methods

Galois, Inc.•Boston, MA
•Hybrid

About The Position

Galois is hiring a Software Engineer/Researcher to advance programming language theory research and implementation. The role applies expertise in formal methods and programming languages to rigorously verify software and systems against security and correctness requirements. Research Engineers design and develop technologies for safety- and security-critical systems, networks, and applications, working in small teams and collaborating with clients, partners, and colleagues. The work spans client requirements gathering, software architecture and design, implementation, formal verification, testing and validation, research and development, and internal technical infrastructure. The position is hybrid and candidates may be based in the greater Boston area or at Galois offices in Arlington, Dayton, Minneapolis, or Portland. U.S. citizenship is required because only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent.
  • Background in programming languages and experience with formal methods.
  • Hands-on experience developing software and applying formal verification techniques.
  • Familiarity with formal methods such as model checking, theorem proving, program analysis, and formal semantics of programming languages, with demonstrated expertise in at least one area.
  • Experience across software engineering practices.
  • Fluency in semi-formal methods, such as Haskell or other functional programming languages, including executable formal specifications.
  • Ability to work well with customers by building rapport, identifying needs, and communicating effectively in writing, verbally, and through presentations.
  • Motivation and ability to self-manage deadlines and quality goals.
  • U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • An MS or PhD in computer science or a related field.
  • Experience applying formal methods to AI and machine learning systems, including verifying, analyzing, or improving their safety, security, or reliability.
  • Direct experience developing high-assurance systems or security products.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering tools, including SysML and AADL.
  • Knowledge of hardware engineering languages and platforms such as VHDL, Chisel, Bluespec, SystemVerilog, and Verilog.

Responsibilities

  • Engage clients in iterative discussions to refine requirements and recommend ways to meet their needs.
  • Develop high-level software architecture and detailed program designs, incorporating assurance considerations and determining where and how to apply formal methods.
  • Extend design prototypes into robust, usable finished products.
  • Use mechanical reasoning tools, such as theorem provers and model checkers, to demonstrate or analyze system security and correctness properties.
  • Construct and regularly conduct system, unit, and regression tests, and perform semi-formal validation and verification.
  • Conduct exploratory research and development of cutting-edge technology and incorporate it into product prototypes.
  • Design, implement, and maintain tools for internal use at Galois, and develop library code shared among projects.

Benefits

  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
  • 401(k) retirement plan with a 5% employer match and immediate vesting.
  • Fully paid medical insurance plans and dental and vision reimbursement plan.
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) with employer contributions.
  • Employee assistance program providing mental health and wellbeing support.
  • Five weeks of paid time off and nine paid company holidays each year.
  • Sixteen weeks of fully paid parental leave for birth, adoption, and fostering.
  • One week of fully paid “Blue Sky” innovation time each year.
