As our Research Engineer III in our Neuromodulation Research Department, you will have broad discretion and independence granted by the laboratory chief or division head and collaborating faculty members. You will engage in the designing, developing, and implementation of biomedical engineering and other research experiments. Every day, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, method development, design of automatic data collection programs, and design and drafting of fixtures and test apparatuses (using rapid prototyping, manual machining, or other methods). You will also provide technical biomedical engineering support in the design, repair, and modification of specialized equipment and their applications, guidance to more junior research engineers and laboratory trainees, and expert partnership in interactions with the laboratory or division head. To be successful in this role, you will maintain supply inventory, organization, and other records, and remain within known fiscal limits when budgeting and forecasting for supplies, preventing delays due to inadequate supplies. You will maintain quality control of all equipment utilized in your research area by initiating routine service checks, preventive maintenance, and calibrating in accordance with equipment manuals, ensuring all equipment is performing to standard and training new personnel on equipment use. You will create, maintain, and update the lab's internal procedure manuals, be constructive and positive when communicating observations, suggestions, problems, and questions, and be a good listener. You will maintain professionalism, openness, and honesty in oral and written communications with team members. You will maintain relationships with vendors to ensure up-to-date knowledge of outsourcing options and find outsourcing options for engineered equipment to minimize cost and man-hours. You will possess expert knowledge of vendors and manufacturers such as the acquisitions of appropriate parts and equipment and the maintenance of the laboratory's needs. You will keep accurate records of research results and efforts and present findings in regular lab meetings. You will execute experiments using designs largely created with independence granted by the laboratory or division head, contribute new ideas for increasing the scope and impact of ongoing projects, and assist in writing and proofreading test reports, manuscripts, and grant applications. You will participate in continuing education such as searching and reading literature, attending presentations, and attending national conferences, and perform tasks outside of your area of focus as needed by other team members.
