About The Position

The Research Data Scientist participates in biomedical research projects, using programming, data mining, statistics, machine learning, and visualization to lead the development, evaluation, and application of algorithms, methods, and software for data analysis. The role includes querying databases, processing and cleaning data, quality control, applying supervised and unsupervised machine learning and statistical methods, deploying production models, and communicating scientific findings through peer-reviewed publications and conferences. The position writes clean, performant, reusable code managed on GitHub to support repeatable analyses and to train and deploy models across multiple environments. At the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Research Center at Cedars-Sinai, the work supports ethically vetted, evaluated, validated, and implemented AI research addressing gaps in disease mechanisms, diagnostics, risk assessment, and therapeutics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, machine learning, applied mathematics, econometrics, statistics, engineering, physics, or a related discipline.
  • Two years of professional experience in the healthcare or pharmaceutical industries working with biomedical data.
  • Two years of programming experience at an intermediate skill level with a high-level programming language such as R or Python; college projects may be acceptable.
  • Two years of programming experience at a basic to intermediate proficiency level in SQL.

  • Master's degree in data science, computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience in biomedical machine learning.
  • Prior research data science experience.
  • Strong computational skills, particularly in Python or R, and experience working with biomedical or other large-scale datasets.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, evaluation, and application of computational and statistical methods, including artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms and software, for biomedical data analysis.
  • Present and communicate scientific results through laboratory meetings, scientific conferences, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Create database-to-deployment pipelines for models using programming languages, primarily R, Python, SQL, and neo4j.
  • Create sustainable data science infrastructure and follow data analysis and machine learning best practices.
  • Perform data cleaning, quality control, and exploratory data analysis to assess the need for and appropriateness of advanced analytical methods.
  • Lead discussions with senior or lead research data scientists and principal investigators to identify where data science can best answer biomedical research questions.
  • Test and validate code to ensure robust data applications, using version control through GitHub.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
