Under direction, the Research Business Manager (BM) supervises daily Research Business Operation's procedures through analytical and administrative staff. Independently manages mid-size research portfolio. The BM implements procedures and utilizes sound judgement to communicate and guide staff and faculty. The BM has expert knowledge in the areas of research administration and COH policies, procedures, and systems. The BM operates with a working knowledge of management and leadership competencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (any discipline)
  • 3 years of administration experience in an academic research or healthcare environment
  • 2 years of progressively responsible management experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, finance, business administration, research administration, science, or related field.
  • 5+ years of business management experience in an academic research or healthcare environment is preferred.
  • 2 years of progressive responsibility supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee portfolio financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cost transfers to support research operations.
  • Manage proposal development, compliance-related effort reporting, expenditures, and collaboration with key research support offices.
  • Advise faculty and departmental staff on research administration, patents, intellectual property, and clinical trial matters.
  • Coordinate personnel actions across the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, job changes, separations, visa-related processes, system access, and payroll/timekeeping approvals in accordance with institutional policies and procedures.
  • Support departmental operations including purchasing, facilities, travel, safety coordination, maintenance, and general lab services.
  • Manage and mentor research operations staff, monitor workload and performance, and provide regular feedback and oversight.
  • Support strategic planning and represent research operations on organization-wide initiatives and committees as assigned.
