About The Position

The Software and Societal Systems (S3D) department within the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a Research Associate for an interdisciplinary project focused on the development and evaluation of Privacy Technology for Smart Cities. This role is particularly suitable for a post-doctoral candidate, though a PhD is not strictly required. The project involves extending existing Internet of Things Privacy Infrastructure, developed by Prof. Norman Sadeh, in collaboration with the City of Long Beach. The work will include developing, piloting, and refining this technology, with potential for new functionality including GenAI. The project currently supports over 100,000 IoT resource descriptions and has seen significant user adoption of its IoT Assistant app.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree required.
  • 1-3 years of research experience required.
  • Strong background in privacy and security.
  • Strong background in Human Computer Interaction, including human-centered design.
  • Capable of working under limited supervision.
  • Well organized.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience collaborating in large-scale research and software projects.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral Degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptual design, development, and empirical evaluation of privacy technology with end users.
  • Running human subject studies to evaluate new functionality and user acceptance.
  • Working closely with the Principal Investigator, Prof. Norman Sadeh.
  • Publishing papers in top-tier conferences and journals.
  • Supervising more junior team members.
  • Interacting with end-users.
