About The Position

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a 2-year appointment. The Research Associate is intrinsically involved in the research project where they contribute, by way of their academic expertise, to the project as directed by the principal investigator. The Research Associate is expected to carry out research responsibilities with a high degree of independence.

Requirements

  • PhD in Computer Science
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the field of artificial intelligence at the post-doctoral level.
  • Strong background in formal logic, including epistemic and temporal logic
  • Background in reinforcement learning research, including in the area of objective representations for sequential decision making (e.g., reward machines)
  • Track record publishing AI research, including in the area of AI safety, in premier international peer-reviewed forums
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • Strong writing and communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Developing formalisms, algorithms, and proofs: Contributing to AI research by creating novel formalisms and algorithms and proving theoretical results.
  • Writing and publishing research findings: Disseminating research results by writing and publishing papers (including with research collaborators) at academic workshops, confereences, and journals.
  • Grant writing and reporting: Using subject matter knowledge in the field of research, contributing to the creation of proposals to obtain research funding from funding agencies and supporting reporting requirements related to ongoing grants.
  • Mentoring students: Providing graduate and undergraduate students in AI projects with specialized research guidance and relevant expertise.
  • Research group support: Supporting the operation of the principal investigator's research group, including but not limited to, organization of research lab meetings, preparation of research output for dissemination and promotion, dissemination of research at scholarly venues and funder meetings.
