About The Position

The Torres-Vázquez Lab at NYU Langone uses transparent zebrafish embryos to understand how blood and lymphatic vessels form and function, both during normal development and disease. Major techniques used in the lab include confocal imaging, gene expression analysis, forced gene expression, transgenesis, genome editing, cell transplantation, cell culture, and biochemistry. In this role, the successful candidate will conduct basic science research under the mentorship of a senior scientist. The individual is expected to build a portfolio of research accomplishments in preparation for pursuing a higher degree in biomedical research or medicine. Thus, this position is ideal for those who wish to pursue a Master’s or Doctoral degree later. The individual in this role is responsible for conducting fundamental scientific experiments within the assigned laboratory. These experiments will be based on ongoing research projects and protocols established in the lab, and the work will be carried out under the mentorship and supervision of a senior scientist. This position offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a research environment, allowing the individual to apply and deepen their understanding of biomedical science. Additionally, the individual is expected to actively contribute to the lab's research goals by generating reliable data and figures, analyzing results, and assisting with preparing scientific reports, publications, grant proposals, and progress reports for funding agencies. A key focus of this role is to support the development of a robust portfolio of research accomplishments that will be valuable to those pursuing advanced degrees in biomedical research, medicine, or related fields. This position plays an important part in fostering scientific growth and professional development in preparation for future academic and career goals.

Requirements

  • College graduate with a B.S. or B.A. in Biomedical or Physical Sciences.
  • A minimum commitment of two years is required.
  • Placement in position may not exceed three years.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the following: molecular biology, genetics, confocal microscopy, developmental or vascular biology, a genetically amenable model organism (for instance, zebrafish, flies, nematode, mouse), and data analysis.
  • Self-motivation, a strong sense of responsibility, solid quantitative skills, and the ability to learn independently are also pluses.

Responsibilities

  • Generates hypotheses and designs and performs experiments to test them.
  • After a period of time working in the laboratory, the candidate will be expected to train graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in experimental design, technique and performance.
  • Participates in the editing and proofing of grant proposals, annual grant reports, and manuscripts for publication and recommends modifications to the Principal Investigator.
  • Contributes to the preparation of articles on research outcomes and progress and to the submission of same for publication.
  • Reads and understands relevant scientific literature.
  • Presents findings at lab meeting, responds to challenges, and participates in exchanges of ideas to advance the science.
  • Demonstrates a significant level of intellectual input into the design of the project.
  • Communicates results and collaborates with other professionals in the lab.
  • Prepares figures and diagrams for presentations and publications
  • Based on results, independently suggests and tests modifications to protocols.
  • Records all experimental findings in a laboratory notebook, analyze and interpret experimental findings.
  • Executes multiple experiments simultaneously over time independently.
  • Conducting fundamental scientific experiments within the assigned laboratory.
  • Generating reliable data and figures, analyzing results, and assisting with preparing scientific reports, publications, grant proposals, and progress reports for funding agencies.
