About The Position

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai’i may apply for Casual Hire appointments, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits provided to regular Board of Regents or Civil Service employees. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees. This position is a Casual Hire Research Associate with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR) in Maui. The position is temporary, full-time or part-time, for an 11-month term, and is subject to funding availability and renewal based on performance, staffing, and funding. The salary is $30.00 - $34.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.

Requirements

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Agriculture, Plant Science, Soil Science or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for research support, data analysis, and/or data collection ; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of research support, data analysis, and/or data collection as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with research support, data analysis, and/or data collection.
Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of Soil hydrology concepts, such as Crop Water Productivity, Precipitation Use Efficiency (PUE), and Effective Use of Water (EUW).
Knowledge of agronomic performance and conservation outcomes of cover cropping systems for topsoil stabilization and watershed protection.

Responsibilities

Assist Principal Investigator (PI) and co-investigators with monitoring field trial methodologies to monitor agricultural strategies as it relates to soil water-use effectiveness under severe drought conditions.
Participate in the design, development, and analysis of research trials.
Prepare and process soil assessment samples to evaluate treatment effectiveness across various field trial methods.
Assist with writing scripts to parse and organize data.
Assist with writing reports for stakeholders and assists with preparing and presenting field trial observations, data analyses, and actionable findings for project stakeholders.
Perform other duties as assigned.
