About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business is seeking a Research Associate to join its team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a dynamic and intellectually challenging environment. In this role, you will collaborate with Professor Emily Diana to investigate how humans engage with large language models in learning and knowledge acquisition. The project examines the strategies and decision-making processes individuals use to determine when and how to leverage AI tools, balancing short-term efficiency with long-term knowledge development. This work has direct applications to classroom learning, academic research, and organizational policies for employee development. There may also be opportunities to collaborate with researchers across Carnegie Mellon and with industry partners.

Requirements

Master’s degree required
Successful completion of a pre-employment background check

Nice To Haves

Current PhD student in the 4th or 5th year in computer science, operations research, or related field preferred
1-3 years of research experience
A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Responsibilities

Review literature related to the emerging use of AI technologies
Leading the mathematical modeling process and guide the development of a theoretical and algorithmic framework
Performing an empirical analysis or investigating the possibility of data collection for empirical work
Other duties as assigned
