About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University's Mellon College of Science (MCS), specifically the Biological Sciences department within the Hiller Laboratory, is seeking a Research Associate. This role involves assisting in the development and execution of research projects, including experiment design, data analysis, and writing up results. The position requires collaboration with laboratory members to interpret genomic data, contribute to manuscript preparation, and develop new computational approaches for biological questions. Experience with comparative genomics pipelines for bacterial genomes is highly desirable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • 1-3 years of demonstrated experience working in an experimental neuroscience laboratory required.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, reasoning, and communication skills.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in computational biology or related field preferred.
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • May program software in support of job functions.
  • Attends project meetings.
  • Identifies problems and obstacles to progress; develops strategies to solve problems.
  • Summarizes statistical information for analysis, examination or presentation; writes technical reports.
  • May build and validate quantitative models.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain computational pipelines for comparative genomic analyses of large bacterial genome datasets including: genome assembly and annotation, pan-genome and phylogenomic analyses, comparative analyses of gene content and sequence variation, integration of genomic and experimental datasets, data visualization, and management of high-performance computing workflows.
  • Assistance with manuscript preparation.
  • Uses a variety of software packages to input, manipulate, collect and record results or observations.
  • Training of incoming students.
