About The Position

The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Timko. The individual will join a well-established research program aimed at plant genetic engineering. Work in the laboratory is currently focused on the identification of genes involved in response to plant biotic and abiotic stress response and resistance and synthetic biology approaches to detection of environmental contaminants. Opportunities exist to become involved in cutting edge word aimed at the creation of novel gene functions for the development of biosensors for the built environment.

Requirements

  • Completed a Ph.D. in plant biology, biochemistry, plant genetics/genomics, or a closely related field by the appointment start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior training and experience in basic molecular biology, gene cloning and gene vector construction as evidenced in the applicant's published works.
  • Experience in plant cell culture and gene expression analysis/bioinformatics a plus.
  • Prior experience with gene editing (CRSPR, etc) methodologies highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Perform genetic manipulation of genes and expression vectors and to perform transformation and regeneration of plants.
  • Perform routine molecular biological experiments including DNA extractions, gPCR/RT-PCR, gene expression profiling with RNAseq technologies.
  • Provide supervision and training for graduate and undergraduate researchers
