About The Position

The College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University is seeking applications for a Research Assistant. This role involves working with large ruminants (dairy cows, calves, pigs), pigs, and potentially other animals. Responsibilities include performing necropsies on large ruminants (dairy cows, pigs) and collaborating with staff to identify structures and assess pathology. The position requires utilizing various skills such as basic laboratory acumen and safety, pipetting, aseptic technique, and animal husbandry. The Research Assistant will follow building, laboratory, and animal room SOPs for a BSL-3 Ag facility and must be able to wear a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) and other necessary PPE for up to 4 hours at a time. The role also involves using various laboratory instruments and machines (pipettes, test tubes, syringes, BSC cabinets, centrifuges, plate readers, PCR machines, etc.) and working with staff in AIEERP to create and implement schedules for study participants. Travel up to 70% may be required, dependent on the PAAR study schedule.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Previous experience with laboratory processes
  • Previous work with large animals
  • Ability to check standard FBI background check, including fingerprinting, as part of the Select Agent Division for processing

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work experience at BSL-3, BSL-3 Ag, or BSL-3 + is a plus
  • Previous experience with assays related to bio surveillance, molecular biology of emerging infectious diseases (RT-PCR, Cell Culture, ELISA, etc.)
  • Enrollment and training in various aspects of biosafety, biosecurity
  • Previous work with handling, sampling large animals is strongly encouraged

Responsibilities

  • Wearing a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) and other necessary PPE for up to 4 hours at a time.
  • Utilizing various laboratory instruments and machines (pipettes, test tubes, syringes, BSC cabinets, centrifuges plate readers, PCR machines etc.).
  • Work with staff in AIEERP to create and implement schedules for others involved in studies.
  • Travel up to 70% (dependent on PAAR study schedule).
