About The Position

This individual will be a faculty member in the Department of Anesthesiology and will report directly to the Vice Chairman, or his designee. This individual will be an expert on translational development of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) based therapeutics for treating serious chronic neurological disorders. A focus on nonopioid chronic pain therapeutics research and therapeutic candidate development are highly preferred. The hiring rank will be based on experience and current/past level of research funding. The Department of Anesthesiology is in need of a faculty member to work within the Division of Translational Research. The Division is engaged in interdisciplinary translational research programs spanning bench-to-bedside developing gene therapies for chronic neurological conditions with substantial ongoing NIH support. This position is open at the assistant/associate/full professor level. The appointment will depend on the candidates training and experience. This role requires the candidate to possess broad training in Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) gene therapy, microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, molecular biology, as well as animal models of human disease. The incumbent will participate in ongoing gene therapy programs and carry out independent funded research projects. These projects should be relevant to translational development of HSV-based therapeutics for treating serious chronic neurological disorders in support of the Department’s long-term research mission.

Requirements

  • Faculty member in the Department of Anesthesiology
  • Expert on translational development of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) based therapeutics for treating serious chronic neurological disorders
  • Track record of obtaining research funding in scientific disciplines (clinical, basic sciences, or both) relevant to the Department
  • Successfully obtain substantial research support for his/her own projects within three years
  • Excellent communicator in writing and spoken English
  • Broad training in Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) gene therapy, microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, molecular biology, as well as animal models of human disease
  • Extramural research funding and/or the ability to develop competitive research projects and design and submit timely competitive research-oriented grants and contracts to funding agencies
  • Capable of participating in team science and interactions with multiple departments and institutions
  • PhD; and/or MD; and/or DVM
  • Minimum of 3+ years of relevant professional experience

Responsibilities

  • Develop competitive research projects

  • Represent the Department at various international, national, state and local meetings
  • Make professional presentations to students, colleagues, support groups and community groups
  • Publish research findings in top refereed journals, book chapters, and books
  • Work with faculty and staff to assist other investigators in their career development and obtain research funding within the Department and from other disciplines
  • Develop and teach relevant courses in the Department of Anesthesiology as assigned by the Department Chair, or their designee
  • Participate in the development and mentoring of residents, fellows, students and faculty in the capacity of advisor
  • Participate in external, institutional and Departmental committees
  • Participate in ongoing gene therapy programs
  • Carry out independent funded research projects
  • Participate in team science and interactions with multiple departments and institutions
  • Train and support technicians, students, fellows, and faculty
  • Mentor faculty, fellows, residents
