About The Position

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a full-time (40 hours/week) paralegal position located in our Augusta Office. This individual will provide in-office support for Assistant Attorneys General in the Criminal Division. This position will be specifically assigned to the Assistant Attorney General assigned to the Unsolved Homicide Unit and will also act as a utility paralegal to assist with current homicides and Freedom of Access of Information (FOAA) requests.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years of paralegal experience in a law firm, court, or legal services agency - OR - graduation from an approved, accredited paralegal program of instruction and one (1) year of paralegal experience.
  • Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Document and information management.
  • Drafting letters, legal pleadings, proposed orders and memoranda.
  • Organizing large amounts of reports and other investigative materials.
  • Tracking case data.
  • Maintaining calendars for hearings, court appearances, meetings and deadlines for assigned AAG(s).
  • Opening, closing and archiving files.
  • Coordinating Grand Jury with court personnel and detectives.
  • Preparing and Disseminating Grand Jury Subpoenas.
  • Preparing and organizing hearing and/ or trial exhibits.
  • Preparing and organizing trial and/or hearing exhibit and witness lists.
  • Reconciling files with primary detectives.
  • Organizing and preparing discovery.
  • Proofreading and editing documents.
  • Receiving, acknowledging and responding to all Freedom of Access of Information (FOAA) requests for homicide cases.
  • Applying knowledge of Maine criminal law and procedure.
  • All other responsibilities assigned by the Division Chief and/or Direct Supervisor.
