About The Position

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Summer Research Assistant Intern (Temporary) to work at the UHealth campus in Miami, Fl. The Research Assistant Intern provides support in the performance of research related tasks for the assigned department(s) including data compilation, manipulation, and presentation. Additionally, the Research Assistant Intern leverages knowledge to perform complex duties involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological, and other research laboratory tests, experiments, and determinations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience required

  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
  • Communication: Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Eligibility Requirements: Enrolled in an associate or bachelor’s degree program in a STEM related field.
  • Strong interest in PhD, MD-PhD, or physician scientist MD careers in biomedical sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Performs literature research.
  • Compiles reference and statistical data into standard formats.
  • Analyzes and presents data and information in written, oral or graphical forms.
  • Documents experiment results and draws tentative conclusions.
  • Prepares and conducts literature reviews on proposed topics.
  • Maintains accurate records of research protocols documentation.
  • Participates in the preparation of research papers and abstracts.
  • Coordinates database management.
  • Performs special projects and assignments in a timely fashion.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Conducts hands-on research such as mammalian cell culture, immunostaining, flow cytometry, or PCR under the supervision of a faculty mentor or PhD student.
  • Manages and prepares biological samples, including processing research specimens or prepping samples for imaging and genomic sequencing.
  • Follows strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) and maintains detailed records in a lab notebook to ensure experimental reproducibility.
  • Collects, organizes, and cleans large datasets using tools like Excel, R, or specialized bioinformatics software.
  • Performs comprehensive searches of scientific journals to stay current on oncology developments and identify gaps for new projects.
  • Prepares and delivers a final poster or oral presentation at an end of summer symposium summarizing your project results.
  • Contributes to the drafting of abstracts, manuscripts, or grant proposals alongside senior researchers.
