About The Position

The Research Assistant I will support research activities primarily focused on animal science. This role involves hands-on experience in collecting samples on the farm and processing them in the laboratory according to specific research protocols. Responsibilities include data collection, sample processing, laboratory maintenance, data entry, and assisting with animal feeding protocols and outreach events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree
  • Experience collecting samples on the farm.
  • Experience processing samples in the laboratory.
  • Experience with analyses such as fecal egg count, packed cell volume, ELISA, glucose tolerance test, and DNA test.

Responsibilities

  • Collect research data, including weights, parasite data, and heat stress data.
  • Collect research samples such as blood, semen, feces, and forages.
  • Process research samples, including centrifugation and freezing/refrigeration.
  • Collect, label, and store samples in the laboratory, maintaining records and inventory.
  • Maintain laboratories and research supply storage in an organized and updated manner.
  • Prepare supplies for data collection days.
  • Inform the program leader of any low stock supplies.
  • Perform data entry and create basic graphs.
  • Participate in and assist with the animal feeding protocol under research.
  • Assist with workshops, seminars, or tours related to the Animal Science Program.
  • Assist field staff with research tasks.
