About The Position

Under general supervision, the Research Assistant will perform research work related to an NIH R15 grant focused on “Aim32p; a multi-faceted protein in mitochondrial biogenesis.” The role involves supporting research projects by executing standard molecular techniques such as PCR, protein gel electrophoresis, and native PAGE, as well as yeast techniques including growth assays in liquid cultures and on media plates, and mitochondria DNA translation assays. The Research Assistant will also be responsible for general lab maintenance, collecting, verifying, recording, and compiling data and information from ongoing research. This position requires working with two model organisms: Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) and E. coli.

Requirements

  • Typically Bachelor’s Degree in science or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an academic laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures utilized within a Biochemistry or Molecular Biology laboratory.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Good habit of maintaining a clean lab working environment.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Time management skills.
  • Proven ability to successfully follow through on assigned projects.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable and a self-starter.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of statistical software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Perform experiments related to research projects, accurately record results and conduct data analysis.
  • Conduct research work using standard techniques of molecular biology/biochemistry.
  • Collect and record results from experiments and provide data to laboratory members.
  • Maintain clear and organized notebooks documenting procedures used and cell growth data generated.
  • May supervise student interns to complete specific experiments associated with their research projects.
  • Train and provide additional instruction as required (to student interns).
  • Advise the supervisor on ordering reagents and laboratory supplies when needed.
  • Perform basic routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Provide advice on equipment repairs and upgrades, when needed.
  • Organize and maintain supplies and reagents.
  • Prepare purchase orders when needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
