About The Position

UTHealth Houston Neurology Department is hiring for a Research Assistant I/II to join their team of professionals. The RA II will be responsible for supporting the Human Autopsy and Brain Cutting Conference by assisting with the collection of human postmortem tissue and organizing/maintaining paperwork. They will also assist with daily tasks in the Histology Core, including preparing slides for histological experiments, performing various staining techniques, and assisting with slide scanning and imaging. Additionally, the role involves ensuring quality control and safety by conducting checks and maintaining compliance with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulations, and codes to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • May substitute required education with equivalent years of experience beyond the minimum experience requirement.

  • Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
  • Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in operating various microtomes and vibratomes.
  • Experience with routine staining, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization.
  • Experience with slide scanning and imaging.
  • May participate in continuing education programs, seminars, and workshops.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the collection of human postmortem tissue.
  • Organize and maintain paperwork following autopsies and brain cutting conferences.
  • Prepare slides for histological experiments, including internal and external requests, with proficiency in operating various microtomes and vibratomes.
  • Perform a range of staining techniques, such as routine staining, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization.
  • Assist with slide scanning and imaging.
  • Conduct quality control checks to maintain high standards of work.
  • Ensure compliance with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulations, and codes to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Performs laboratory experiments and activities to support research objectives.
  • Collects, organizes and prepares research data to provide needed information to principal investigators and other researchers. Updates notebooks, records, and databases as needed.
  • Maintains clean laboratory equipment and/or work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Orders laboratory and/or other supplies as directed by senior research staff.
  • Stays abreast of new and updated procedures and protocols for the research laboratory. Must maintain compliance with required training. May participate in continuing education programs, seminars, and workshops.
  • As needed, may coordinate the work of technicians to ensure efficient, timely and high-quality results.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
