About The Position

This position is for a Research Assistant interested in a gap year(s) to gain experience in a research lab. The role involves assisting with various aspects of the research process under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) and/or experienced laboratory personnel. Guided activities may include literature review, experimental design, execution and troubleshooting of experiments, data collection and analysis, and communication/presentation of results. The position is time-limited, up to a maximum of 3 years.

Responsibilities

  • Take care of the Mouse colony at our animal facility (husbandry, weaning, and ear tagging).
  • Perform in vivo experiments such as glucose and insulin tolerance tests.
  • Draw blood samples.
  • Perform tissue harvesting.
  • Perform immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis on various animal tissues.
  • Perform projects, experiments, data collection, and data analysis under the direction of the PI or lab members.
  • Design experiments under the guidance of the PI or senior lab members.
  • Perform data entry and maintain a lab notebook.
  • Receive mentorship for activities related to career goals and objectives (e.g., PhD or MD programs).
  • Under supervision, draft materials for manuscripts, presentations, and/or posters.
  • May present results as directed by PI.
  • Review literature related to relevant research.
  • Learn lab functions helpful in running a lab (e.g., purchasing, explaining protocols to other lab members).
  • Assist in developing procedures and guidelines for the lab.
  • Assist with general lab upkeep, maintenance, and cleaning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
