This position is responsible for maintaining and managing Drosophila melanogaster stocks, including setting genetic crosses, collecting progeny, and performing routine husbandry. The role involves preparing and processing Drosophila tissues for downstream analyses, performing immunofluorescence staining and whole-mount in situ hybridization experiments. The Research Assistant will operate laser-scanning confocal microscopy systems, process and analyze confocal images, and perform RNA isolation. Additionally, the position includes carrying out reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR), preparing and analyzing polytene chromosome squashes, maintaining detailed laboratory notebooks and electronic records, and preparing weekly progress reports. The role also involves troubleshooting experimental procedures, optimizing laboratory protocols, assisting with ordering supplies, and maintaining laboratory organization. Adherence to institutional laboratory safety procedures and participation in laboratory meetings are also key aspects of this role.
