About The Position

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Neurological Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a full time Research Assistant 1 to work in Miami, FL. The Research Assistant contributes with research investigators by providing research and experimentation support while following established protocols. Further, the Research Assistant performs a clerical role to ensure the smooth operations of office facilities. Dr. Shah’s laboratory investigates mechanisms of viral oncogenesis and novel viral-based therapeutics for cancer. A key component of the research is to advance our understanding of the cancer vir-ome, glioma immunology, and novel drug targets. The lab focuses on rapidly translating these discoveries to advance the treatment of malignant brain tumors. The Research Assistant will assist the PI with purchasing cell-lines, preparing cell cultures, and run several experiments with varying time-frames. The incumbent will also assist with documentation to submit to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to obtain approval for animal experiments. The incumbent will be responsible for handling animals and assist in making preparations for animal surgeries. The Research Assistant will be responsible for taking documentation, measurements, data entry, and simple analysis of experiments. The incumbent will assist the PI in summarizing the data for presentations and papers.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Commitment to the University’s core values.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • High School diploma
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience or equivalent educational experience
  • Ability to work independently and on a team.
  • Ability to handle animals (eg. mice) and to sacrifice the animal according to IACUC procedures.
  • Willing to work long hours or on weekends for certain experiments.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • Interest in the medical field is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up and operates various scientific apparatus and makes minor repairs.
  • Prepares correspondence and answers phones.
  • Formulates and maintains bibliographies and completes applications and forms.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and maintains culture media reagents.
  • Reviews and edits various materials for publication and prepares publication schedules.
  • Maintains appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Assists the PI with purchasing cell-lines, preparing cell cultures, and run several experiments with varying time-frames.
