About The Position

The Department of Biology at McGill University, under Professor Laura Pollock, is seeking a Research Assistant 1 for the Blitz the Gap project. This role involves writing R, Python, and Bash scripts to process, clean, and transform geospatial datasets. The assistant will produce maps and spatial outputs using geospatial libraries and toolboxes, assist in the design and maintenance of project websites and data visualization tools, and prepare biodiversity map products for the BC Parks Program. Responsibilities also include performing routine data analysis, summarizing findings, maintaining organized records of code and data for reproducibility on GitHub, and carrying out other research support tasks such as communicating with partners via email.

Requirements

  • Strong coding skills.
  • Self-motivated to coordinate the summer long project, which includes working with stakeholders.
  • BSc in biology with an emphasis in Ecology.
  • Experience running bio-blitzes.
  • Must have completed some computer science classes.
  • At least 3 months experience working in a multi-disciplinary team doing citizen science.
  • Level 4 English communication skills (verbal and written).

Responsibilities

  • Writes R, Python, and Bash scripts to process, clean, and transform geospatial datasets for use in the Blitz the Gap project.
  • Produces maps and spatial outputs using geospatial libraries and toolboxes under the direction of the PI and postdoctoral mentor.
  • Assists in the design and maintenance of project websites and data visualization tools using existing frameworks and code with slight code modifications necessary.
  • Prepares and delivers biodiversity map products for the BC Parks Program in coordination with the project team, following partner specifications that have already been set in a workshop.
  • Performs routine data analysis and summarizes findings for review by senior researchers.
  • Maintains organized records of code, data files, and processing steps to support reproducibility and team collaboration on github.
  • Carries out other research support tasks such as sending emails to partners when needed.
