About The Position

The NYC Commission on Racial Equity (NYC CORE) is seeking a Research and Policy Intern focused on Thriving and Economic Stability. This independent commission, established after New Yorkers approved ballot proposals for racial equity and justice, is tasked with guiding and assessing the city's racial equity planning process and holding city government accountable. The intern will support the Research and Policy Team in advancing racial justice through research on critical issues affecting New Yorkers' economic stability, including the cost of living, housing, food, health, transportation, and education. The role involves analyzing government operations, programs, and policies to identify and address inequities, with a focus on the lived experiences of communities harmed by racism and social injustice.

Requirements

  • Current Graduate Student
  • Commitment to racial equity, social justice, accessibility justice, and changing whole systems in government.
  • Understanding of power, privilege, and oppression and how they shape data, policy, and legislation.
  • Experience in various research methods including ethnography, focus groups, interviews, community-based research, or participatory action research (academic or applied settings).
  • At least 2 years of data and research for policy experience (academic or applied settings) with a focus on disparities in access to safe and stable housing, food, health, mental health, education, child-care support, and resources necessary for economic stability.
  • Experience in collecting and working with data from government agencies.
  • Excellent time management skills and experience working in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school.
  • New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment.

  • Experience in community engagement, community organizing, and serving in an accountability or oversight body.
  • Background of living in, working within, or growing up as a member of communities facing historical oppression.
  • Demonstrated commitment, competency, and strong familiarity with issues affecting Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, Middle Eastern, or Pacific Islander communities in New York City, or other marginalized groups.
  • Technical skills or project management skills.
  • Experience preparing written reports, infographics, presentations, literature reviews, and research summaries for diverse audiences.
  • For Assignment Level II (Information Technology): Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
  • For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow): Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, review, and analyze news, research, and policy updates related to New York City government operations, programs, and policies concerning access to resources for thriving and well-being.
  • Conduct comprehensive literature, policy, and practice reviews.
  • Support the development, tracking, and monitoring of data requests and data collection protocols for city agencies, community-based service providers, and other relevant organizations.
  • Support the Community Organizing and Engagement team by attending community events to collect data and document stories and lived experiences.
  • Conduct descriptive quantitative and qualitative analysis, and support higher-level multivariate analyses highlighting structural racism and disparities in access to housing, food, health, mental health care, transportation, education, and childcare supports.
  • Synthesize and interpret research findings, and develop resource documents such as codebooks, coding schemes, and file specifications.
  • Draft proposals for interviews, focus groups, and/or survey questionnaires; assist in facilitating interviews and focus groups; draft and/or help administer surveys; clean, code, merge, and prepare administrative data files for analysis.
  • Create and design reports, 1-pagers, and data visualizations (graphs, infographics, PowerPoint presentations, data profiles, and dashboards) for diverse audiences, elected officials, and community members, ensuring accessibility and clarity.

Benefits

  • Compensation range of $17-21.40 per hour.
