About The Position

This position leads a dynamic team and supports members of the Department of Surgery who are engaged in sponsored research or other sponsored activities. The manager directs and conducts administrative activities to maintain and build on the vibrant and expanding Surgery research portfolio. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates who are interested in growing in the field of research administration. The successful candidate will have expertise in grant submission, management, and compliance; experience in managing and supervising a team; and demonstrate highly effective communication, organizational, and motivational skills. The candidate will also embrace personal accountability to meet tight and critical deadlines, demonstrate strong analytical skills, and take initiative to support department and research goals. Ability and interest in working in a positive, collaborative, team-focused environment is also expected. This individual will partner with and report to the Director of Research Operations, collaborate closely with the Post-Award Accounting Manager to ensure financial compliance throughout the lifecycle of an award, participate in Department strategic initiatives, and serve as a key resource to the Co-Vice Chairs for Research. This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location. Terminal, 24 month appointment This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge in grant submission and management required, preferably experience with federal grants
  • Experience in a medical, research, or educational setting
  • Experience managing and supervising a team
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to write and communicate effectively

Nice To Haves

  • Strong computer skills, especially with Microsoft products
  • Experience with computer programs Workday and RAMP

Responsibilities

  • Implements research administration operational policies and procedures including financial, administrative, staffing, and compliance
  • May review and approve programmatic transactions spanning the life-cycle of sponsored projects to ensure compliance with policies and procedures
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit
  • Executes activities related to proposal submission, contract negotiation, and/or award setup on behalf of a unit
  • Executes activities related to financial compliance, audit, or reporting on behalf of a unit
