About The Position

KUT News is seeking an early-career journalist to serve as a reporting fellow for a new project focused on aging in Austin. The fellow will engage with the community, report on challenges faced by seniors and caregivers, hold policymakers accountable, and examine critical issues in Central Texas through the lens of aging. This is a one-year fellowship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • One year of professional reporting experience at a news organization.
  • Experience meeting deadlines and reporting under strict time limits.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  • Must complete the federal Employment Eligibility Verification I-9 form.
  • Must present acceptable and original documents to prove identity and authorization to work in the United States by the third day of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using Adobe Audition to mix audio stories for broadcast.
  • Spanish-language skills.

Responsibilities

  • Generates ideas, researches topics, writes, and reports stories for web and radio.
  • May capture photos and videos for multimedia components of stories.
  • Ensures all content produced meets KUT standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance.
  • Actively incorporates multiple perspectives and voices into the editorial process.
  • Identifies omissions in coverage and suggests mitigation strategies.
  • Helps organize and participates in live events focused on aging in Austin.
  • Reports news for national programming and The Texas Newsroom as assigned.
  • Attends news meetings with story suggestions.
  • Provides assistance to other KUT staff working on the aging in Austin project with story research and background materials.
