About The Position

The San Diego Union-Tribune is seeking an ambitious, resourceful, thoughtful and tenacious reporter to cover and serve the diverse communities of California’s second-largest city and beyond. The ideal candidate will have strong writing skills, bottomless curiosity, a knack for people-centered reporting, a deep interest in journalism that engages with and reflects local communities, and a track record of enterprise reporting with real-world impact. As a border city, Navy hub and cultural destination, San Diego is home to a clutch of communities unlike any other, and this reporter will get to know many of them — its especially large and multifarious military, LGBTQ+, Indigenous and immigrant communities, yes, but also its more intentional communities spanning everything from surfing to cruising to housing cooperatives. This beat is as rich, expansive and exciting as you make it.
