About The Position

The Globe and Mail is seeking an ambitious reporter to cover energy and politics in Ottawa. Canada has set ambitious goals to ramp up the country’s energy sectors and has committed to streamline approval processes to help attract investment to achieve those goals and to diversify trade. To be successful, you will have a firm grip on energy, energy policy and the business of energy, including capital markets. The ideal candidate will understand the speed and extent to which the political discussion on energy has shifted and a curiosity to explore Ottawa's intention to be both investor and business enabler in Canada’s energy future. Reporting to the politics and economy editor, this is an opportunity to join a collaborative team of reporters who cover politics, economics and business. Working out of The Globe’s Ottawa bureau, with whom you will work closely along with Western Canada bureaus, you will be expected to file a variety of stories regularly: source-based scoops; breaking and scheduled news; enterprise reporting; and features that bring energy and economic policy to life.

Requirements

  • At least five years’ experience as a reporter in a daily news organization
  • Solid news judgment with a track record of enterprise work
  • Ability to translate economic policy into engaging prose for The Globe’s audience
  • Familiarity with political reporting and economics
  • Strong writing with versatile range - from hard news to human-interest feature to explanatory
  • Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio
  • This position is based in the Ottawa office and requires a minimum of two days a week in office.

Responsibilities

  • Cover breaking and live economic and energy policy news from Ottawa.
  • Frequently pitch fresh, compelling story ideas
  • Develop and maintain sources in government and business
  • Write clearly and concisely on deadline
  • Work with colleagues across the department and wider newsroom to generate story ideas and enrich The Globe’s coverage
  • Think beyond standard storytelling formats and participate in Globe subscriber events
