About The Position

The Canadian Press is looking for a dedicated journalist who wants to make an impact debunking false information as part of the CP Fact Check team. The successful applicant will arrive for work armed with original ideas to combat misinformation and an interest in sharpening their investigation skills. The Canadian Press is a signatory to the International Fact-Checking Network’s code of principles, which require us to meet standards of methodology, fairness and transparency of sources. Our accreditation demonstrates our commitment to identifying and addressing disinformation. Fact-checking experience is a plus but not required. Fairness and accuracy are paramount. The successful candidate will possess strong critical thinking and research skills and demonstrate an enthusiasm for learning new digital research techniques. The position will typically involve working three days per week over the term of six months. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and be comfortable reporting on a wide range of subjects. This position will report to a manager in Montreal but is remote and can be based anywhere in Canada.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a real-time, digital newsroom
  • Solid news judgment
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Superior research skills, with an emphasis on tracking digital footprints
  • Ability to write and edit copy to CP Stylebook standards
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure
  • Attention to details and ability to organize time and workflow effectively
  • Familiarity with various social media sites

Nice To Haves

  • Fact-checking experience is a plus but not required.
  • Experience working with fact-checking tools an asset
  • Bilingualism an asset

Responsibilities

  • Monitor social media and other sources to identify dubious claims that are relevant to Canadians and could expose people to harm.
  • Rigorously research claims to produce checks that clearly lay out the evidence for the facts and document primary sources.
  • Write fact checks that are concise and transparent, with an emphasis on fairness and accuracy.
  • Work independently but also pitch in to help the team when needed.
  • Keep track of new techniques and technology to aid in fact check reporting.
  • Work with editors and other team members to evaluate what's working and to explore ways to improve CP Fact Checks.
