About The Position

CBC London is seeking an experienced reporter/editor to join their news team. The role focuses on creating compelling mobile-first video, live reporting, explainers, and visual storytelling that engages the community. The ideal candidate is passionate about local news, excels at breaking news, and thrives in a fast-paced, multiplatform newsroom. This position requires a journalist who understands the London area's issues and can bring original ideas to daily stories. The role involves reporting for audio and visual platforms with speed and accuracy, demonstrating strong news judgment, organizational, and writing skills. The candidate will amplify local issues, develop local contacts, and seek out underrepresented voices to grow the audience. Emphasis is placed on understanding audience needs, media consumption habits, and ensuring reporting is fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate, and resonates with the communities served, while adhering to CBC journalistic standards.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily multiplatform news environment.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience.
  • Sound news judgment and a proven track record of reacting quickly to breaking news and changing priorities, and chasing multiple stories at once.
  • Experience in reporting live and breaking news on broadcast platforms.
  • A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.
  • Superior writing and vetting skills across platforms.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC journalistic standards as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Knowledge of and an interest in emerging storytelling formats and a willingness to embrace change and new tasks across all CBC platforms (audio, video, digital).
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in London, and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.

  • Background check, including a mandatory Criminal record check.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch and chase original daily ideas that set the agenda in London.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news events – chasing, gathering, writing and packaging stories for all platforms (audio, video and digital).
  • Arrange for, travel to and conduct interviews across all platforms in the community.
  • Report live and breaking news, providing analysis and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.
  • Experience determining potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations, and ability to act on them.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts in London.
  • Working closely with producers, reporters and hosts to develop and break stories, and coordinate coverage.
