CBC News is hiring a reporter-editor for our two-person bureau in Dawson City, Yukon. If you’re a creator who likes to break new ground, this role is for you. You’ll be launching a brand new bureau, one that brings CBC News closer to the people who live in the area, sharing their stories locally and across Canada. As the second-largest municipality in Yukon, and the permanent community of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, Dawson City is a vital link in the social, cultural and political infrastructure of the sub-Arctic region, shaped by the relationship with the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in and newcomers, many who came in search of land and resources during the Klondike Gold Rush. Adaptability is key to the role of reporter-editor. One day you could be covering a story important to local residents, or pivoting to cover breaking news. The next day, you’re working behind the scenes to chase guests and line-up interviews for Yukon Morning, Midday Cafe or Airplay, the daily live radio shows broadcasting across the territory. There will also be times when you are filing to network programs, sharing your local story with Canadian audiences. Central to all of your coverage is ensuring voices from the region are reflected in our journalism across digital, radio, social, streaming and TV. In this role, you’ll operate independently, under the direction of the CBC assignment desk in Whitehorse, Yukon. While you’re comfortable working solo to get things done, you will have a lot of daily support from your colleagues at CBC Yukon. You will also have access to training opportunities to support your development with CBC News. The region is home to the Tr’ondëk-Klondike Unesco World Heritage Site, intact boreal forest, wetlands and rivers. It’s a 1.5 hour drive to Alaska on the Top of the World highway. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the easy access to year-round activities; hiking, fishing, mountain-biking, river-rafting, paddling, cross-country skiing, dog-sledding and snowmobiling to name just a few. There’s a vibrant arts scene and you can try your hand at Canada’s first official sport, cricket during the long summer days. While the role requires you to be full-time on-site in our Dawson City bureau, we are open to offering it, by mutual agreement, as either a permanent or temporary contract, depending upon the successful candidate’s circumstances.

Requirements

Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment, or an equivalent position in a deadline driven environment with transferable skills.
Ability to work independently with superior problem-solving skills.
Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original stories that meet the needs of audiences.
A proven track record of connecting with local communities.
Superior writing skills, and experience in gathering, editing and packaging audio and video.
Ability to present stories live on-air, from within the studio and out in the field.
A willingness to embrace change and take on new tasks as the media industry evolves.
A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
Possession of a valid driver’s licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio Canada’s insurance company.
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, as required.
University degree or college certificate in journalism or equivalent, with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience.

Nice To Haves

Fluency in Hän, written and spoken, is an asset but not required.

Responsibilities

Pitch, research, gather and produce original story ideas for digital, social, radio, streaming and TV programming that will engage and inform audiences, deepen community connections and elevate a range of voices, especially those who have typically been underrepresented in media.
Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.
Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.
Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of contacts and community members.
Collaborate with colleagues across CBC to develop and break stories, plan and produce features and coordinate long-term coverage.
Ensure CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.
