About The Position

The Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) plays a crucial role in air traffic controller training by simulating the actions and communications of pilots and other air traffic control facilities within a training simulator. This full-time position, based at the Potomac TRACON (PCT) in Warrenton, VA, supports the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) by operating simulated radar displays and voice communication systems. RPOs receive commands from students, input data to mimic pilot actions, translate information into air traffic control terminology, and communicate with students using proper phraseology. Successful candidates will need to obtain specific certifications, including passing tests on airspace and procedures, and demonstrating proficiency as an RPO in the lab environment. The FAA relies on well-trained air traffic controllers to ensure public safety, managing over 50,000 aircraft daily. SAIC provides essential training and support services to meet the FAA's training needs across various air traffic control facilities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate basic computer proficiency.
  • Ability to read and interpret materials such as diagrams and manuals.
  • Ability to speak clearly and be understood.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team (Multimedia Developers, Quality Assurance, Instructions System Designers, Subject Matter Experts, Instructors).
  • Experience and certification in ATC Tower, TRACON or En Route simulation lab.
  • Working knowledge of the FAAO JO 7110.65.
  • Effective team building skills.
  • Basic familiarization of current technologic tools (tablets, notebooks, applications, etc.).
  • Basic familiarization or experience with pilot/controller communications or phraseology.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a simulated radar display and voice communication system to simulate pilot actions and communications.
  • Input proper entries into the automated system to simulate pilot actions.
  • Translate displayed information into appropriate ATC terminology.
  • Respond to students via the Voice Communication System (VCS) utilizing proper phraseology.
  • Complete required certifications, including classroom tests on airspace and procedures, and lab performance as a Remote Pilot Operator.
