Relief Veterinary Technician
About The Position
BluePearl Specialty + Emergency Pet Hospital is hiring an experienced locum/relief Emergency Veterinary Technician to join its team in Scottsdale, Arizona. This is a relief/locum-only role and is not full-time. Pay is $22–$35 per hour, depending on experience, licensure, and competency-system leveling. Shift differentials are offered for specified evening, overnight, and weekend shifts. The technician provides emergency veterinary care, including patient handling and monitoring, medication administration, phlebotomy, peripheral IV catheter placement, physical examinations, and intubation under the direction of a Level II technician or higher. The role also includes following treatment-sheet orders and supporting veterinarians and clients through euthanasia. Requirements
- Experienced Veterinary Technician; the posting does not specify a minimum number of years of experience.
- Ability to calculate basic medical math.
- Ability to handle patients compassionately, calmly, and gently.
- Knowledge of commonly used medication classifications, side effects, and therapeutic-response monitoring.
- Ability to administer medications via appropriate routes and durations.
- Ability to perform phlebotomy.
- Ability to place a peripheral intravenous catheter in the cephalic vein.
- Ability to recognize and report patient-status changes and abnormal exam or monitoring parameters.
- Ability to perform physical exams and accurately obtain or assess the listed vital signs and observations.
- Ability to intubate patients under the direction of a Level II technician or higher.
- Ability to read and follow treatment-sheet orders accurately and promptly.
Responsibilities
- Calculate basic medical math.
- Approach and handle patients compassionately, calmly, and gently.
- Understand commonly used medication classifications and associated side effects, and appropriately monitor therapeutic response.
- Administer medications by appropriate routes and for appropriate durations.
- Perform phlebotomy.
- Place a peripheral intravenous catheter in the cephalic vein.
- Alert the veterinarian when a patient's status changes or physical exam or monitoring parameters fall outside normal ranges.
- Perform physical exams and accurately count heart and pulse rates, assess capillary refill time and mucous membranes, and measure temperature, respiratory rate, and respiratory effort.
- Intubate patients under the direction of a Level II technician or higher.
- Support the veterinarian and client through the euthanasia process.
- Read and follow treatment-sheet orders accurately and promptly.
