About The Position
Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians shifts in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. The appointment-based model helps manage patient flow, and trained staff handle clinic operations so veterinarians can focus on patient care. Relief veterinarians can continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, set their own rate for each shift, and choose shifts through flexible online scheduling. There is no minimum or maximum number of shifts, with weekday and weekend hours available. Vetco Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement. They do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. Most are located within Petco stores, with some operating in mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. They have equipment including digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and fully equipped surgery suites. Hospital shifts do not include overnight or emergency on-call work.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
- State veterinary license in good standing.
- Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
- Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
- Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.
- A DEA registration in good standing is required for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
Responsibilities
- Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
- At vaccination clinics, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
- At full-service hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
- Perform shift functions in accordance with applicable licensing requirements and local, state, and federal mandates.
