About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians work in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. They are primarily located within Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. They are equipped with digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and surgery suites. Hospital shifts do not include overnight or emergency on-call work.

Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online and choose shifts that fit their lifestyle. There is no minimum or maximum number of required shifts, and weekday and weekend hours are available. Veterinarians set their own rate for each shift, may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, and pay no agency fees. Appointment-based care helps manage patient flow and supports leaving on time, while trained staff handle operations. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, along with a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including the ability to perform blood draws and administer vaccines.
• DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during selected relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics and/or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At vaccination clinics, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At full-service hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform shift functions in accordance with applicable licensing requirements and local, state, and federal mandates.
