About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services relief veterinarians may work in Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. Most are located in Petco stores, with some in mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals offer preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, with digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and equipped surgery suites. Hospital relief shifts do not involve overnight or emergency on-call work.

Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online, choose from weekday and weekend hours, and set their own rate for each shift. There is no minimum or maximum shift requirement, and veterinarians may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts without agency fees. An appointment-based model and trained staff support patient flow and clinic operations so veterinarians can focus on care. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements. Veterinarians also receive a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all functions required during the shift, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• A DEA registration in good standing is required for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• Ability to provide Professional Liability Insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during selected relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At Vaccination Clinics, perform basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At Vetco Total Care hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Meet applicable state, local, and federal requirements and licensing rules for the functions performed during each shift.
