About The Position
Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians the opportunity to work in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. They are primarily located in Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, with equipment that includes digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and fully equipped surgery suites. Hospital staff are licensed and trained, and there are no overnight or emergency on-call shifts. Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online, with no minimum or maximum shift requirement and weekday and weekend options. Veterinarians set their own rate for each shift, may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, and do not pay agency fees. An appointment-based model helps manage patient flow and supports leaving on time, while trained staff handle operations so veterinarians can focus on patient care. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, and offers a 15% discount on Petco products and services.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine state license in good standing.
- Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
- DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
- Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
- Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.
Responsibilities
- Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics and/or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
- At vaccination clinics, perform basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
- At full-service hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
