About The Position

Human Resources announces an opening for a Relief Custodian. This is a full-time position, 12-months, 1st shift, Grade M-07 position located at the Trades Center with Plant Operations. NOTE regarding work schedule/shift assignment: The work schedule is subject to change, depending upon the needs of APS. Incumbents in this class are hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift assignment. Once hired, an employee may be reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of APS. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES INCLUDE: (The following may not include all the required duties and responsibilities performed.) Function as custodial building supervisor in the absence of assigned custodial building supervisor, including ordering supplies, maintenance work orders, receiving supplies, inventory control, building inspections, identification and follow-up on pest control issues. Shampoo carpet and seal wooden floors during the summer. Move furniture and other heavy objects as directed by supervisors. Outdoor grounds maintenance and snow removal. Instruct subordinates regarding Arlington Public Schools cleaning procedures and follows up on instructions. Performs routine preventive maintenance on custodial and grounds equipment. Locks and unlocks doors, check the security of the building and grounds, activates the alarm system. Other duties as assigned. NOTE HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS: Employee is exposed to potential chemical hazards and toxic substances when using cleaning liquids, solvents and solutions, to potential biological hazards when cleaning restrooms, and to potential physical hazards when operating custodian equipment. Work also exposes employee to dust, fumes and occasionally to adverse weather conditions. Work requires the frequent use of safety clothing and equipment and compliance with safety procedures. EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED. National Executive Housekeeping Association certification or must attend all required NEHA courses. Valid driver’s license. Must submit and pass Non-DOT drug and alcohol testing. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of all cleaning techniques and procedures, proper applications of cleaning chemicals, including safety considerations; Demonstrated cleaning experience in hospitality, healthcare, educational or institutional settings with a focus on excellence. Ability to supervise; assigning and monitoring the work of lower level custodians; ability to train and inspect the work of subordinates and participate in all phases of building cleaning activities. Able to lift 50 lbs. unassisted. Able and willing to attend training sessions as required in order to update skills. Able to create a positive working relationship with school based staff. Able to establish and follow through on a cleaning plan for the building. Able to follow written and oral instructions. Reliable, flexible and dependable; must be able to change work schedule during the summer months, and/or as necessary to meet the school system’s needs.
