About The Position

The relief captain is expected to work two days a week, providing excellent customer service while prioritizing safety. They are responsible for navigating the M/V Ptarmigan across Portage Lake, completing five trips per day, managing the crew, and possessing conflict resolution skills. This position operates with little supervision, requiring daily decision-making within company policies and procedures. The role demands quick problem-solving, confident decision-making, and the ability to command in emergency situations. This role has supervisory duties.

Requirements

  • 100 Ton Inland Masters License or greater
  • Experience driving and docking boats
  • VHF radio communication skills
  • Management skills
  • Experience running emergency drills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks and external influences
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while achieving daily goals
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • High school completion or equivalent
  • Minimum age of 21 required
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Comfortable performing credit card transactions for onboard ticket sales
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to stand/walk/work on feet for a minimum of 8 hours per day
  • Must have valid driver's license
  • Successful completion of criminal background check

Nice To Haves

  • Required to drive an hour along the Seward Hwy to and from work if residing in Anchorage
  • Must be comfortable working outside all day long in the elements; sun, rain or wind
  • Need to be mobile and limber enough to crawl through tight voids, go up and down ladders, walk over uneven surface
  • Need to be available two days a week for 10 hours a day. Extra overtime may be required either prior to regular start time or after, for regulatory maintenance and fueling
  • Ability to support and comply with company policies, procedures and guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of the vessel, passengers, and crew, responding to emergency situations and maintaining an up-to-date ship log.
  • Maintain a strict schedule of five sailings per day, making confident weather calls when necessary and adjusting timing to stay on schedule.
  • Manage the crew to ensure they are working at the expected standard, fostering a positive and safe work environment.
  • Accurately track passenger counts during boarding according to USCG regulations, ensuring the vessel does not exceed its capacity of 142 passengers.
  • Maintain communication with the office via radio, relaying passenger counts, departure times, and any issues that may impact sailing decisions.
  • Perform engine room start-up and shut-down procedures, conducting necessary checks to ensure all equipment is running properly and safely.
  • Perform deckhand duties, including handling mooring lines, securing the gangway, and assisting passengers and crew.
