Reliability Test Engineer

Lunar Energy•Mountain View, CA
•$130,000 - $165,000

About The Position

Reliability Test Engineers at Lunar Energy help the engineering team determine whether home energy products are ready to ship and own the evidence behind that decision. They design and automate test stands to collect product performance data and analyze results. The role supports end-to-end validation of power converters—including inverters, DC-DC converters, and solar optimizers—and battery systems. It spans test planning and specification development, test-stand design, execution, data and failure analysis, and reporting. The engineer collaborates across electrical, mechanical, thermal, software, firmware, and manufacturing disciplines to understand how product and process changes affect reliability and validation strategy. Lunar Energy is a fast-growing global company founded to help transition homes to clean energy by developing products that electrify homes and connect communities into clean, resilient virtual power plants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or engineering physics.
  • Strong curiosity, ownership, and ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in one or more of electronics and circuit analysis, heat and mass transfer, or statics and mechanics of materials.
  • Experience with electrical test equipment such as power supplies and data acquisition systems, and diagnostic tools such as multimeters and oscilloscopes.
  • Python or equivalent programming experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Mechatronics or robotics concentration.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming, state machines, and test automation.
  • Basic mechanical design or CAD experience.
  • Experience testing power electronics or battery systems.

Responsibilities

  • Validate power converters and battery systems end to end, including test planning, test-stand development, test execution, data analysis, failure analysis, and reporting.
  • Develop test specifications that reflect representative field conditions and translate field data, product behavior, and known failure modes into stress profiles targeting the product’s physics of failure.
  • Develop detailed functional test plans that balance thoroughness with scalability across large sample sizes.
  • Design and develop custom electrical, thermal, and mechanical test stands.
  • Define test-stand architecture, specify equipment and instrumentation, and work with technicians to design and fabricate test stands.
  • Write Python test software to automate testing and process large datasets.
  • Improve test infrastructure, including software tools and custom test equipment, to obtain more data and insight with less effort.
  • Drive failure analysis for test failures and support root-cause analysis for field failures.
  • Analyze test data and failure-analysis results, and identify the next data or experiment needed to test a failure hypothesis.
  • Document and communicate test results, conclusions, limitations, caveats, confidence levels, and engineering recommendations to cross-functional teams.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to determine how design and process changes affect reliability and validation strategy.

Benefits

  • Competitive base pay.
  • Opportunity to become a Lunar shareholder through equity in the company and participation in its employee stock program.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents.
  • Flexible paid time off and 10 paid holidays.
  • Tax-deferred 401(k) plan.
  • Paid parental leave for full-time employees, including 12 weeks for the birthing mother and 6 weeks for the non-birthing parent.
  • Subsidized EV charging.
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits.
