About The Position

Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems Sector is seeking a Reliability Systems Engineer at Level 3 (Principal Systems Engineer) or Level 4 (Sr. Principal Systems Engineer) in Redondo Beach, California. The position supports reliability engineering for space systems and is contingent on obtaining and maintaining associated business and/or customer funding, as well as obtaining final clearances and program access within a reasonable period. Continued employment depends on maintaining the clearance and program access required for the position. The engineer leads reliability support to design teams through design tradeoffs, reliability predictions and assessments, de-rating analysis, reliability requirement allocation, failure-rate estimation, FMEA facilitation, critical-item identification and documentation of controls or mitigations, design-review support, and failure investigations. The role also creates reliability block diagrams and models, collaborates with engineering teams to address reliability and availability problems, applies probability and statistical methods to non-standard system-success definitions, and uses commercial best practices and industry tools to perform cost-effective analyses. The position requires an eligible STEM degree and engineering experience based on level. Candidates must have active SCI access at application and before starting, or an active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance (or equivalent) and the ability to obtain and maintain active SCI access within a reasonable period. The role includes travel approximately 10% of the time. Relocation assistance may be available.

Requirements

  • For Level 3: Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline and 5 or more years of engineering experience, or a Master's degree in a STEM discipline and 3 or more years of engineering experience, or a PhD in a STEM discipline and 1 or more years of engineering experience.
  • For Level 4: Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline and 8 or more years of engineering experience, or a Master's degree in a STEM discipline and 6 or more years of engineering experience, or a PhD in a STEM discipline and 4 or more years of engineering experience.
  • Understanding of how to perform and assess reliability predictions.
  • Familiarity with modeling and simulation software used for reliability analysis.
  • Familiarity with interpreting electrical schematics and drawings and functional block diagrams, and ability to create reliability block diagrams accurately.
  • Experience performing and documenting a unit- or system-level FMEA using standard commercial best practices.
  • Experience performing and documenting piece-part or component failure-rate estimation using available data, such as handbook methods or life-test data.
  • Active SCI access at application and before start, or an active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance (or equivalent) at application and before start, with the ability to obtain and maintain active SCI access within a reasonable period.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering.
  • Understanding of technical principles, theories, subsystem design, and general satellite design.
  • Ability to combine hands-on reliability analysis and modeling skills for satellite, directed-energy hardware, and systems.
  • Availability modeling and analysis experience or exposure.
  • Experience performing FMEA and failure-rate estimation.
  • PM&P and electronics design experience or exposure.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance (or equivalent) and active SCI access at application and before start.

Responsibilities

  • Lead reliability support to design teams, including design tradeoffs, reliability predictions and assessments, de-rating analysis, reliability requirement allocation, and failure-rate estimation.
  • Facilitate Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEAs), identify critical items, and document controls and mitigations.
  • Support design reviews and failure investigations.
  • Create reliability block diagrams and models reflecting system or unit functions, failure modes, and characteristics.
  • Work with engineering teams to develop technical solutions to potential reliability and availability problems.
  • Apply probability and statistical tools and principles to problems involving non-standard configurations or definitions of system success.
  • Use commercial best practices and industry tools to conduct cost-effective reliability analyses and assessments.
