Reliability Engineer

XNRGY Climate Systems•Mesa, AZ

About The Position

XNRGY Climate Systems is hiring two Reliability Engineers in its Service Engineering—Liquid Cooling & Mission Critical department in Mesa, Arizona. The positions support the company’s growing installed base of chillers, computer room air handlers (CRAHs), and fan coil wall systems. Both share core responsibilities; product emphasis will be aligned with each candidate’s experience. One position is weighted toward chillers and refrigeration, while the other emphasizes air-side equipment, electrical systems, and controls. The Reliability Engineer investigates field failures, determines their causes, develops corrective actions, and helps prevent recurrence. Working within Service Engineering, the role connects field teams with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Service Operations. It leads warranty and defect investigations, manages service-parts data, provides senior technical escalation support, and turns field findings into product, process, and documentation improvements. The role also helps establish investigation standards, service-parts structures, and escalation processes as XNRGY builds its support systems for a growing mission-critical installed base. The position reports to the Manager, Service Engineering and requires approximately 30% travel to active data-center sites across North America, with possible periods of higher travel during significant field investigations. Site work may take place on active construction projects or in live data centers and can involve work at height, confined spaces, and proximity to energized equipment. Applicable certifications, safety procedures, and personal protective equipment are required. Some investigations may occur outside normal business hours when immediate access is needed to preserve evidence or restore critical operations. The role offers participation in the annual performance incentive plan; medical, dental, and vision insurance; retirement benefits; an employee assistance program; paid time off; and full funding for applicable trade, safety, and quality certifications. XNRGY provides a laptop, mobile device, instruments, and personal protective equipment. The company describes a path toward senior engineering, product service engineering, or engineering management, along with career-advancement opportunities and an inclusive, diversity-friendly workplace.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of technical education and demonstrated engineering-level competence; qualifying military technical training combined with a strong field-service record may also satisfy the education requirement.
  • Five or more years of experience in field service, product support, sustaining engineering, or reliability engineering involving complex electromechanical equipment.
  • Experience supporting equipment used in mission-critical environments such as data centers, semiconductor manufacturing, healthcare, power generation, or similarly demanding operations.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting structured root-cause analysis on actual equipment failures.
  • Ability to describe and defend completed investigations and their resulting corrective actions.
  • Strong diagnostic ability across mechanical, electrical, and controls systems.
  • Evidence-based troubleshooting approach that identifies underlying causes rather than relying on repeated parts replacement.
  • Experience writing standard operating procedures, troubleshooting guides, service instructions, or other technical documentation used by field personnel.
  • Direct experience supporting field technicians, commissioning teams, or service operations.
  • Ability to establish credibility with experienced technicians and other professionals working directly on equipment.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to defend a technical position with engineers, customers, and suppliers.
  • Comfort working in a low-structure, high-ambiguity environment where processes are being developed alongside the work.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Ability to travel approximately 30%, with travel potentially increasing temporarily during significant field events.
  • Ability to meet site-work conditions and applicable certification, safety-procedure, and personal protective equipment requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • HVAC and refrigeration experience, particularly involving centrifugal chillers, CRAH units, fan coil wall systems, or air-handling equipment.
  • Naval engineering experience in nuclear, conventional, surface, or submarine environments.
  • Commissioning experience on capital projects involving a formal commissioning process and third-party commissioning authority.
  • Experience with process piping and systems, including hydronic and refrigerant piping, valves, pumps, flow measurement, and system-level behavior.
  • Experience with variable-frequency drives, programmable logic controllers, and building-management-system integration using BACnet or Modbus.
  • Experience managing a service bill of materials, parts catalog, or service-spares strategy.
  • Working knowledge of computerized maintenance-management systems, field-service platforms, or failure-data analysis and reporting tools.
  • Formal quality training such as 8D facilitation, FMEA, Six Sigma, or supplier corrective-action management.
  • NFPA 70E qualification and OSHA construction-safety training.

Responsibilities

  • Lead warranty and defect investigations from the initial field report through verified corrective-action closure.
  • Conduct structured root-cause analysis using 8D, five-whys, fault-tree analysis, failure mode and effects analysis, or another suitable method.
  • Prepare investigation reports for review by customers, suppliers, engineering teams, and warranty stakeholders.
  • Present findings and open actions to the Field Defect Committee and maintain an accurate action log distinguishing completed actions from unresolved items.
  • Determine whether failures stem from design issues, manufacturing escapes, supplier defects, transit damage, installation conditions, or service errors.
  • Support cost recovery when evidence indicates responsibility falls outside XNRGY.
  • Analyze failures across the installed population to identify patterns before they develop into larger service campaigns.
  • Build and maintain the service bill of materials for assigned product lines, including defining field-replaceable components and appropriate replacement levels.
  • Own part supersessions, quarantines, and interchangeability requirements, and notify field teams of changes before incompatible parts are installed.
  • Partner with Service Logistics to establish stocking locations and quantities based on installed-base needs and observed failure rates.
  • Support development and maintenance of a parts catalog that enables technicians and authorized service agents to identify and order correct parts independently.
  • Provide senior technical escalation support to field technicians, commissioning teams, and XNRGY’s certified service-agent network.
  • Provide remote field support and travel to customer sites when the nature or severity of a problem warrants direct involvement.
  • Support system commissioning and validation under actual operating conditions; participate in functional performance and integrated systems testing when manufacturer involvement is required.
  • Respond to significant field events, establish the facts while evidence remains available, and produce a clear written record.
  • Incorporate investigation findings into startup procedures and test scripts to help prevent recurrence.
  • Translate field findings into service bulletins, troubleshooting guides, revised startup procedures, and updates to installation, operation, and maintenance manuals.
  • Redline and update product drawings using computer-aided design tools to reflect field findings and serviceability improvements, working with the appropriate design authority.
  • Initiate and track engineering change requests arising from service experience and verify that completed product or process changes resolve the original problem under field conditions.
  • Produce practical technical documentation for technicians working in real-world site conditions.
  • Develop technical content for technician-certification programs, including diagnostic scenarios based on actual field failures.
  • Brief field teams and authorized service agents on new failure modes, product changes, and the technical reasoning behind them.
  • Mentor field technicians and junior engineers in evidence-based, structured diagnosis rather than repeated parts substitution.
  • Transfer field knowledge across Service, Commissioning, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality.
