Release Train Engineer

McKesson•Columbus, OH

About The Position

McKesson is hiring a dedicated Shared Product Capabilities Value Stream Release Train Engineer for CoverMyMeds. The Shared Product Capabilities team builds reusable capabilities relied on by CoverMyMeds’ Specialty, Retail, and Pharmacy & PBM product teams, including a unified provider portal, medical prior authorization connectivity to payers, benefits verification, enrollments, consent, affordability, and AI-driven Next Best Action. Within CoverMyMeds’ SAFe Operating Model and Lean Portfolio Management framework, the Release Train Engineer serves as the chief facilitator for alignment, execution, and continuous improvement across multiple teams and dependent product value streams. The role establishes operating cadences that support work from strategy through delivery, coaches teams and leaders, improves predictability, manages dependencies, and addresses complex delivery challenges. It enables system-level alignment and execution but does not own product priorities, technical architecture, team-level delivery decisions, or people management. The role partners with Product Management, Technology, User Experience, Data, portfolio partners, business leadership, peer Release Train Engineers, and value stream leaders. It uses delivery metrics, AI-enabled analytics, dashboards, and AI-assisted tools to identify bottlenecks and risks, improve planning and decision-making, and support adaptive value delivery. McKesson offers a competitive compensation package. The base pay range for this position is $115,400–$192,300; additional compensation, such as an annual bonus or long-term incentive opportunities, may be offered. Pay is determined by factors including performance, experience, skills, equity, market evaluations, and geography.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent experience and typically 7+ years of relevant professional experience in Agile delivery, program delivery, product development, technology, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Agile teams in a scaled environment and leading large, cross-functional planning and execution events.
  • Strong working knowledge of SAFe, Lean, Scrum, Kanban, PI Planning, dependency management, flow, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Advanced facilitation, coaching, stakeholder management, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to develop practical approaches to complex problems, exercise sound judgment with limited direction, anticipate change, and redirect efforts as needed.
  • Ability to influence without formal authority and communicate credibly with delivery teams, senior leaders, and cross-functional partners.
  • Strong systems thinking and ability to connect delivery patterns, risks, dependencies, and organizational outcomes.
  • Experience using Agile planning and collaboration tools such as Atlassian and Miro.
  • Hands-on use of AI tools, such as AI assistants, agents, or custom prompts and skills, to improve delivery work including planning preparation, story and objective drafting, reporting, and analysis; sound judgment about when AI adds leverage and when human facilitation and review should lead.

Nice To Haves

  • SAFe Release Train Engineer, SAFe Practice Consultant, SAFe Agilist, Certified ScrumMaster, Agile Coach, PMP, or comparable certification; relevant experience is valued alongside credentials.
  • Experience supporting healthcare technology products such as prior authorization, benefits verification, payer or EHR connectivity, medication access, or another healthcare delivery environment.
  • Experience with AI-assisted facilitation, predictive delivery insights, scenario modeling, or automation of Agile metrics and reporting.
  • Experience in a product-led operating model or value stream spanning product, engineering, data, user experience, and business teams, particularly a shared-capability or platform value stream serving multiple product areas.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Operating Model Transformation Team and Product Operations to design, facilitate, and continuously improve value stream and ART operating cadences, including PI Planning, ART Syncs, Scrum of Scrums, Product Owner Syncs, System Demos, Inspect & Adapt workshops, and PI execution reviews.
  • Bring lessons from the cross-cutting value stream forward and recommend improvements to shared processes, artifacts, and cross-value-stream planning practices.
  • Establish an operating rhythm and lead large-scale, cross-functional planning and execution events involving multiple teams, competing priorities, and real-time decision-making.
  • Prepare teams and leaders for PI Planning by aligning priorities, capacity, dependencies, risks, objectives, and backlog readiness.
  • Facilitate Program Board creation and planning alignment, confidence voting, risk ROAMing, and capture of committed and stretch PI objectives.
  • Support pre-planning activities to promote realistic sequencing, alignment, and committed delivery outcomes.
  • Ensure cross-team dependencies, risks, blockers, and impediments are visible and actively managed across the value stream.
  • Improve system flow by identifying systemic bottlenecks, mediating cross-team conflicts and dependency trade-offs, and escalating issues that cannot be resolved at team level.
  • Partner with peer Release Train Engineers and value stream leaders to align cross-value-stream dependencies, shared team capacity, and integration milestones before and during each PI.
  • Make competing demands for shared capacity visible, frame trade-offs with data, and bring them to appropriate leaders for decisions.
  • Track performance, flow metrics, ART health, and delivery outcomes to improve predictability and execution confidence.
  • Use AI-enabled analytics and dashboards to identify patterns and bottlenecks, surface risks, and translate delivery insights into actions and data-driven decisions.
  • Lead Inspect & Adapt workshops, retrospectives, problem-solving sessions, and improvement backlogs to strengthen ART health and delivery performance.
  • Coach teams and leaders on Lean-Agile principles, decentralized decision-making, and system-level thinking; share expertise and guide less experienced colleagues.
  • Connect Product Management, Technology, User Experience, Data, portfolio partners, and business leadership; align strategy, backlog priorities, and execution, and communicate delivery risks, dependencies, decisions, and improvement opportunities.
  • Use AI-assisted tools for facilitation, scenario modeling, and dependency management; apply predictive insights to anticipate risks, optimize sequencing, adapt efforts, and improve decisions during PI Planning and execution.
