About The Position

Train to become a Relay Technician through hands-on experience, formal technical coursework, and guided mentorship under an experienced Area Relay Technician. This role builds the foundational knowledge and skills required to progress to a journeyman-level position, supporting the reliable operation of substation protection, control, and metering systems.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, or proof of equivalent
  • Certification in an electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent program
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workload and use computerized test program
  • Basic computer skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Internet)
  • Good driving record
  • Must be able to obtain a CDL
  • Strong ability to follow safety policies and procedures
  • Pass the Relay Technician Trainee pool entrance exam with a minimum score of 80% (provided by company)
  • Must be a journeyman with three years journeyman experience in one of the following crafts: Journeyman Electrician, Journeyman Meterman, Journeyman Lineman, Electronic Technician (ET-1), Instrument and Control Technician (I&C), and Substation Journeyman.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a working knowledge of substation equipment and systems while assisting with the installation, maintenance, testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment.
  • Work with electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based protective relays; indicating and kWh/kW metering; recording devices such as sequence of events recorders and digital fault recorders; and control systems associated with breakers, transformers, regulators, capacitors, reactors, and related substation apparatus.
  • Support remote control and monitoring systems, including SCADA.
  • Adhere strictly to safety standards and company policies.
  • Work independently or as part of a team.
  • Respond to emergency conditions.
  • Maintain responsibility for assigned tools, test equipment, and vehicles.
