About The Position

Ulteig is seeking an experienced Senior Relay Technician to serve as a technical field lead for protection and control, metering, and SCADA-related commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and energization support. This role is well suited for a hands-on technician who can lead complex field work, coordinate with clients and project teams, and mentor developing engineers and technicians. We recognize that qualified candidates may not have experience in every discipline. You will have opportunities to build on your existing expertise through hands-on assignments, mentorship, and formal training while developing additional capabilities that support a broad range of field activities.

Requirements

  • Associate degree, trade school certificate, or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electrical power, or relay/substation technology; OR equivalent technical training and hands-on experience in protective relaying and metering
  • 5+ years of testing and commissioning or similar experience required
  • Strong foundational understanding of power system fundamentals and basic theory, with the ability to apply it to on-the-job tasks.
  • Working knowledge of HV substation equipment and MV electrical apparatus, including station service, MV switchgear, and protective relaying
  • Ability to maintain a positive, collaborative, and constructive mindset through project challenges, and to contribute to a respectful, team-first culture by bringing energy, accountability, and clear communication to daily work is strongly desired
  • Experience applying industry best practices and established safety regulations to maintain a safe work environment, including the proper use and inspection of PPE, implementation of appropriate hazard-mitigation measures, and issuance of stop-work directives when necessary
  • Ability to travel 50%-75% of the time throughout the United States and work extended or irregular hours during outages and commissioning activities
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, stand for extended periods, work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions, and lift or carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving
  • Must have permanent authorization to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • NETA Electrical Testing Technician (ETT) certifications, NICET Electrical Power Testing (EPT) certifications, a state electrician certification, and/or vendor training certificates are preferred but not required
  • On-site commissioning experience, including CT/PT injection and verification, protective and end-to-end relay testing, protection scheme functional verification, CT/PT burden/load checks, and/or meter accuracy tests preferred
  • Field experience supporting on-site demolition, construction, and hands-on troubleshooting of protection and control schemes preferred
  • Proficiency with relay and meter test sets such as Omicron CMC, Doble F6000, Megger SMRT, Radian RW, WECO, and similar test sets a plus
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems and programming is a plus
  • Knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70) and California Electrical Code (CEC) is a Plus
  • Proficiency in SEL Quickset, SEL AcSELerator RTAC, SEL SynchroWAVe, GE Enervista UR Setup, Schneider ION Setup, and similar vendor software a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and PDF markup or document-management software.
  • Experience using digital tools, automation, or generative AI to improve reporting and field workflows is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead protective relay commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting, and oversee field demolition and construction activities for relay replacement projects at generation facilities, substations, and other sites
  • Operate Omicron, Doble, Radian, and other vendor test sets, running tests through vendor software or manual control
  • Program, install, test, troubleshoot, certify, and verify accuracy of revenue and check meters and electronic data recorders, including Factory Acceptance Testing and diagnosing metering problems
  • Perform point-to-point metering and telemetry testing to validate wiring and data paths from source devices, ensuring successful communication to the head-end system
  • Review and mark-up (yellow-line/red-line) SLDs, 3LDs, schematics, and wiring diagrams and utilize these drawings to support field troubleshooting
  • Review engineering work packages and field conditions to identify constructability, wiring, and commissioning
  • Develop or support field mitigation plans, document deviations, and coordinate required changes with the responsible engineer before implementation
  • Lead field execution by preparing or reviewing test plans, commissioning procedures, job hazard analyses, test records, redlines, daily reports, deficiency lists, and final configuration backups
  • Coordinate field activities with engineers, contractors, owners, and operations personnel, and communicate conditions that could affect safety, quality, schedule, or energization readiness
  • Connect to relays, meters, and RTUs on-site and remotely to retrieve settings, event files, configurations, and other data
  • Support troubleshooting and event analysis through the evaluation of oscillography, sequence of event reports, live data, and on-site wiring
  • Develop and maintain relaying and metering standards, procedures, and safety practices, serve as an expert in discipline-specific software, and train and mentor engineers and technicians in the field and shop
  • Inspect relay and meter panels for adherence to client requirements, applicable codes, and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) standards
  • Support SCADA point-to-point checkouts, RTU, RTAC, and OrionLX configuration review, and troubleshooting of DNP3, Modbus, or similar substation communication protocols in coordination with engineering and integration teams
  • Perform work in accordance with Ulteig, client, and site-specific safety requirements, including job hazard analyses, lockout/tagout procedures, energized-work boundaries, personal protective equipment requirements, and stop-work escalation when conditions cannot be performed safely
  • Estimate labor and equipment for budgeting, maintain schedules, provide progress reports, and work independently in the field while coordinating directly with clients
  • Communicate and interact effectively with clients to ensure their needs are met and to build long-term relationships
